RED TRIGGER

So recently, I spoke with Maxime Vézina about his game Red Trigger and he said some stuff that's pretty interesting if you're into speedrunning. To give a little background, Red Trigger is a platformer game where you use red platforms to launch yourself through tons of puzzles with the end goal of destroying the corrupt computer system known as Red Trigger. It may be a lot to take in just from reading that sentence, but the game's simple mechanics, price-tag of absolutely nothing, beautiful graphics, and some amazing design make it a game worth playing. With over 1,050 hours put into it so far, it's no wonder it has over 150,000 downloads and a world record speedrun of 4 minutes 38 seconds.
In our interview, Maxime told me that the game was to be made for his college (university) class as a show of artistic ability, and was only supposed to be a minimum of 10 minutes long, but he aspired to make something longer, better, and he did it all by himself- with a bit of help of course. His mentor Maxime Chapleau gave some advice on what to add, his friend Florin Popescu with the weapon animations, another friend named Gabriel Essiambre who made the sounds, and Gabriel's girlfriend Lydia Gosselin who did the voice.
But the point is, he didn't want to be in a team that focuses on art instead of design and length, and he wanted to make a game that really suited him. So, he set out and took from some ideas from his favorite games such as Portal, Batman: Arkham Night, Antichamber, Legends of Zelda Ocarina of time, and his all time favorite, Majora's Mask. It took him 15 weeks working 10 hours a day every day to finish it, but he said that he had the whole game finished, but only a very rough version of it. After around 1,050 hours working hard to get this game nearly perfect, we have Red Trigger.
His favorite thing to see is the community finding new things that he implemented, or even some things that he didn't know were in there himself, and he says he watches around 4-5 let's play videos a day to see people's reactions and see what they like and dislike so he knows what to improve on. To have a developer who interacts with fans and really gets to know people who like the game is a blessing, as most big companies just set up a complaint box that may or may not be read.
Although he says that most of the updates to the game will just be small fixes, he said there may be more to look forward to in the future. He hopes to open his own company to develop games some time in the next couple of years and release a sequel as well as a remastered version of Red Trigger. Though it may be a long wait, what you can do for now is go to the steam page for the game, play it, and leave a review so he can make some adjustments, and to support him in the long run, go follow the Red Trigger Twitter and Facebook pages for news updates, announcements, and to give him some feedback. A final message from Maxime: "Thank you to everyone who played the game, took the time to write a review, make a Let's Play, or simply clicking on the page out of curiosity." That is all for today, now good luck and happy gaming!
